Rev. James Edward Mathis Jr. was born on March 6, 1986 in Knoxville, TN to James and Ashley Mathis. He is the oldest of four children. He is married to the former Jasmine Samone Whaley. The Lord has blessed his family with a daughter, Kayla Anne. 

Rev. Mathis received his call to preach at the age of 17 (July 2004) and was licensed in January 2005. On August 9, 2015, Rev. Mathis was ordained at Rogers Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Mathis is previously served as the Associate Minister at Rogers Memorial Baptist Church where the Rev. Dr. Michel S.E. Caldwell is the pastor. He served as the Youth Pastor for 8 years then God called him to focus solely on the ministry of Associate Minister.  In the summer of 2012, God blessed Rev. Mathis to envision and launch Hope Ministries which is an Adult Bible Study, and also has an emphasis in outreach and evangelism.  In 2016, the Lord called Rev. Mathis to be the Senior Pastor of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Syracuse, New York.

Rev. Mathis graduated from Carson Newman College in December 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. In 2014, he graduated from Covington Theological Seminary with a Masters in Ministry with an emphasis in Pastoral Studies.

Rev. Mathis served as the Fine Arts Director at Cornerstone Academy in Morristown, TN where he taught Apologetics and Christian Thought, a dual enrollment course for Bryan College, Bible and Music. Rev. Mathis’ hobbies include singing, playing the piano, carpentry, exercising, and fishing. He also loves to spend time with his wife Jasmine, daughter Kayla, and family. Rev. Mathis’ main goal is to be a servant-leader and preach Christ everywhere he goes.
